Celebrity Natural Hairstyles…Slay or Nay?
You know the natural hair movement is on a world class stage when our favorite celebrities are breaking the internet with their naturalista looks. When I was styling at NY Fashion Week, natural hair was the highlight of many shows. We’re getting all types of “Hella Texture” and loving every bit of it.
Texture is now the A-list “Money Look.” But in my own remix of Puff Daddy’s famous line with Biggie… “More Texture, More Problems.” Here’s my take on some of the latest celebrity naturalista looks:
Issa Rae is my Issa Bae! Her hit HBO show Insecure became my guilty pleasure every Sunday, and the source of our most #Lit discussions in the salon. I soooooo love me some Issa…but unfortunately I cannot say the same about how she’s wearing her hair. Issa cannot let her lovable snuggable messy role she plays on set translate to a messy style off set. I do understand her awkward black girl character channels a certain look and aura we’ve deeply connected to as part of “the brand.” However, with high profile endorsements like Cover Girl coming left and right, Issa’s going to have to ditch the “Lawrence’s ex-girlfriend” look for an “Idris Elba’s new woman” makeover.
In this pic of Issa, there’s no distinct shape to the hair that flatters her. At Salon PK we believe texture should always have some form and shape, like these pics shown (right) that could definitely work for Issa. Texture can never be just a big mess, and even if ambiguous in style, it has to have some definition. I’m looking forward to Issa Rae’s re-definition through a Natural Hair Slay …that I just may be playing a role in soon #StayTuned!!!
SANAA LATHAN: “Nay”
Sanaa Lathan is as beautiful as ever, and definitely has the face that could wear anything. However, for this big chop, it would have been a little more flattering leaving just a quarter inch of hair to display some texture. A fly part design is also a unique way to add some swag on a low cut. I’m sure this look is for a role she’s playing, but as long as we’re seeing it without the context of the film, we’re left to ponder on our own assumptions. An A-list superstar should never have us wondering if she had to cut her hair for medical reasons. So adding a little more slay to her “big chop” is the new #ForTheSalonPKChallenge we would love to go viral lol.
TARAJI P HENSON: “Slay”
Taraji’s hair is soooooo Salon PK! In fact, this Salon PK pic (bottom) went viral over a year ago, prior to Taraji debuting this look. Having said that, this textured ombre cut is very flattering for Taraji and makes a bold statement. She can literally reverse the clock, and play a college student in a new filming of a Different World (I would cast her as a sophisticated/hood version of Whitley, and bring back Tyrese as Dwayne Wayne lol). As you can see, At Salon PK we like to give a little more detail in the transition of colors, but overall Taraji’s style is a hit!
