Your health is the most important thing that you should maintain. Not your looks, not your size but your health because maintaining your health leads to everything else being maintained. Maintaining your health literally starts with what you put in your body. That’s right the foods you eat can and will impact your body and your hair. I have spoken with many nutritionist who have sited the best foods for getting healthy hair.

Try eating salmon, trout or other fishes in Omega-3 fatty acids because these foods are high in protein and vitamin D, which are both good foods for stronger hair.

Walnuts are always a good choice when trying to maintain healthy hair because of Omega-3 fatty acids, biotin, vitamin E and copper, which helps keep your natural hair looking its best.

Allergic to nuts? Then try sweet potatoes because not only are they good with butter, but they are a good source of beta carotene an antioxidant that turns into vitamin A as well as reduces some scalp irritations. If you are not too fond of sweet potatoes try carrots, some melons and apricots.

Oysters are a good source of zinc which helps with your protein intake and reduces the chances of your losing your hair, eyelashes and getting dry, flaky scalp. So just grab an oyster and some hot sauce and let it slide down your throat as it works its way to your scalp.

Who doesn’t like eggs? Well if you want healthier hair then the best and least expensive source of protein to maintain healthy hair are eggs. Eggs are full of zinc, selenium, sulfur and iron which helps with getting oxygen to your hair follicles.

If Popeye loved spinach and he had no hair then it shouldn’t be a problem for you to grab some to make sure the iron, beta carotene, folate and vitamin C stay in your diet to keep you hair healthy. Don’t like it, then eat broccoli or kale.

Beans such as lentils, kidney beans and soybeans are also excellent for healthy hair because they have a lot of protein, iron, zinc and biotin. This choice is also a good choice for my vegetarians and vegans who want to maintain their hair without eating meat.

We all know that Greek yogurt is the new thing but did you know that it is packed with B5 which is used in some products for a shiner head of hair. And let’s not forget vitamin D which does a body good.

You can’t go wrong with berries because they are often packed with vitamin C which helps circulate blood to the scalp. Most berries are labeled super fruits for the amount of active natural ingredients they contain.

In 1953, Genius Fashion Designer- Anne Lowe designed Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ wedding dress for iconic marriage to John F. Kennedy. The legendary iconic dress was constructed out of 50 yards of ivory silk taffeta. Legend has it that just ten days before the wedding ceremony a water line broke in Lowe’s New York City studio and completely destroyed the First Lady’s gown along with all of her bridesmaids dresses. But that didn’t stop Lowe, she worked to tireless exhaust to recreate all eleven designs in time for the Rhode Island nuptials! Sadly, the only mention Lowe received by name was a blip in the Washington Post where fashion editor Nine Hyde simply wrote “… the dress was designed by a Negro, Ann Lowe.” #thelookthelife

GRRR. When we exercise, our hairstyle doesn’t always look great once we are done sweating it out. But don’t stop working out because your hair won’t look fly afterwards; we have some workout hairstyle tips that will help. Surely your hair health is just as important as your overall health so be certain to protect your hair pre-workout and during your workout. Putting your hair up in a bun or a ponytail are great exercising hairstyles. After that, you can pat your hair with a towel to avoid sweat going into your roots. If hair gets damp, wrap hair under scarf until its completely dry again and then precede with styling. Re-wrapping serves as another set and will keep the hair smoother than free form air drying.

Develop a workout schedule
If you work-out three times a week, then you should co-wash during the week as well. If you wash or straighten your hair on Saturday, then Sunday to Thursday, you can do yoga and low impact exercising that doesn’t leave your hair soaked. Friday to Saturday, you do a more intense workout because you are going to wash your hair anyway.

Q: I have a bald spot in my hair about the size of a Quarter. Its been there for about 4 months and the hair has slowly started to grow back I went to the doctor and was told it was alopecia (hair loss) and my doctor referred me to a dermatologist I have not been to that appointment just yet what can I do? I’m a young black male and I’m trying to find a way to get my hair cut to make this not so noticeable. What healthy hair & scalp tips do you have?

Tony, you are not alone, in your quest for healthy hair & scalp. Sadly, there are simply many people affected with hair loss. Your doctor was on point when he told you that your condition was alopecia, however there are many types of alopecia such as areata alopecia, scarring alopecia or androgenic and more. Some alopecias is like alopecia areata are acute auto immune conditions, that’s why it will be important that you keep your appointment with the dermatologist. Also follow up your doctor for lab work for blood work to see if you have any thyroid or blood pressure problems. Thyroid and blood pressure conditions and medications are a leading calls of hair loss.

With that being said there are some things that you can do to help the appearance of your hair and scalp. Your haircut may have to be cut really close or faded to blend the area of hair loss depending on exactly where it is on your head. If the patch is at the crown of the head, allowing the other hair to remain fuller may provide some coverage and blend. If it’s a really small patch, a hair color stick for grey touch up-ups can aid in making the scalp thinning less obvious.

When it comes to hair trends no one is more in tune to the beat of change than a hairstylist. It is our job to stay in the know with the latest hair trends for our clients. Here are some of the big hair trend requests more our very stylish clients.

I’m going to start with color. Everyone loves color and one of the colors that has came back around, well it never really left, is blonde, caramel and golden hues and shades. You can go all out and rock a full blonde hair color like Beyonce or you can highlight your hair in your bangs or throughout your hair.

Some of the most popular hairstyles that I have seen include the heavy bang with long tresses, in a bob or with a high ponytail. The heavy bang style is edgy and also sassy.

Another popular style is the swoop bang. This bang is classic and can be parted and worn on either side of the head. The swoop bang can be worn with long or short hair. Many are opting for the shorter cuts and even bobs with the heavier swoop bang.

Also, I am styling more updos. My clients want more sophisticated Mohawks to rock or want their hair positioned in a tight bun at the front of their head. You can do this style with natural or relaxed hair. These styles are easy to maintain if you wrap your hair every night with a scarf.

Causes of Hair Loss

Fact: Alopecia is one of the most commonly untreated and under diagnosed scalp and hair loss conditions. There are several types of Alopecia that result from poor hair maintenance or the wrong hairstyle such as braiding, tight hairstyles and repeat use of hair glue. If you start to experience balding in patches of your hair ,please involve a specialist in Alopecia treatment in addition to your stylist care.

Hormone changes can cause hair loss as well. Hormonal hair loss can be due to hereditary or genetics or can be temporary from menopause, pregnancy or childbirth. Either way go see your doctor if you think something is wrong.

There are several medical conditions that can also cause hair loss. The most common issue that is having a thyroid problem and if it’s not working properly you may start to lose your hair. Again Alopecia is a medical condition. If you see smooth, roundish patches of hair missing then consult your doctor because it can be irreversible. Infections to your scalp can also cause hair loss. Infections like ringworms, using infected improperly sanitized hair tools like brushes and combs and other issues can damage your scalp.

If you are taking a lot of heavy prescriptions for conditions like high blood pressure, Arthritis or even depression, then you may experience hair loss. While I am not a doctor I have seen women who have come in to get their hair done and it was thinning or breaking- and it was from the medicines they were taking.

There are other causes to hair loss which include emotional or physical stress. You can stress your hair right out of your head and cause other health related issues. Hair thinning or breakage is common when someone is stressing so be mindful of your environment. If you are a worrier and one of the things you do is tug or pull at your hair then over time you can cause severe hair damage. Instead of tugging at your hair try another form of release like walking. Finally as I stated earlier hairstyles can cause hair loss. We have all seen the photos of Brandy’s edges or Naomi’s bald hair because of long extensive damage to hair braiding and weaves.

You have to be careful who styles your hair and how you take care of your hair. Talk to your doctor if your hair is shedding too much or if you are balding. My passion for this industry set ablaze in NYC backstage styling as a key celebrity stylist at the BET Black Girls Rock! Awards which aired on BET November 4^th. I was uber honored to be a celebrity stylist at the prestigious “last look” station where I provided the finishing touches for many of the celebrities right before they graced the stage. Curling and laughing. Smoothing and Sharing. Networking and Learning. Servicing the needs of real people who just so happened to be titled “celebrity” in measure.

The fulfillment I got wasn’t so much in the celebrity stylist status aspect- I absolutely considered it an honor to be affiliated with BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc., a non-profit youth empowerment and mentoring organization established to promote the arts for young women of color, as well as to encourage dialogue and analysis of the ways women of color are portrayed in the media.

The BET BLACK GIRLS ROCK! AWARDS highlights the accomplishments of exceptional women of color who have made outstanding contributions in their careers, and who stand as inspirational and positive role models in their communities.

It’s always a thrill working along side my industry peers such as Toni Acey, Tippi Shorter, Tekao Hash, and other phenomenal celebrity stylists and MUAs. Truly, iron sharpens iron. This year’s award show was hosted by actresses Tracee Ellis Ross & Regina King. Music performances included Alicia Keys, Brandy, Ciara, Keyshia Cole, Indie Arie, SWV, Missy Elliot, Anthony Hamilton, & Eric Benet.

Celebrity Hair How-To: Kerry Washington AMA Faux Bob

Celebrity Hair is like the beat of our heart at Salon PK Hair Salon. And I so adore that Kerry Washington is a chameleon with her hair styles, able to go from sleek and modern, to simple and sexy. She rocked a hot hair style for the American Music Awards this past Sunday that declared- Our “SCANDAL” darling is always up for doing something new and fab ! The lace and color for her dress at the American Music Awards needed the hair to be up with a softness in texture but more energy than a traditional up-do. Pinning Kerry’s hair under the create a faux bob gave the look a strong silhouette for a bold color dress.

Creativity & Expertise is a must when a client wants to try bob lengths without committing to the cut. For the celebrity in you-Here’s my Faux Bob Guide.

Using a little Hair Elements Atlantis Setting Foam and a minute amount of pure Moroccan Oil on damp hair, blow out the hair using a medium size round brush. Find the side that naturally parts and swoop the bangs to frame the face. With a 1/4″ ceramic iron wrap small sections of hair from roots to ends throughout the head. (A smaller iron will give the volume and longevity to the look you need). The sections of hair around the face should be wrapped on the iron away from the face. Lightly spray each section with a medium hold hairspray like CHI Ultimate Shaper.

Brush out the hair with a flat paddle brush, like a Mason Pearson, to soften the curls which will also expand for more width and volume. Take the back section of the hair and roll under toward the nape into a large pin curl and secure with large bobby pins from each side so they’re parallel with each other. Then do the same with both the left and right sides. Leaving the shorter layers around the face and on top make it more fun and youthful. Always add a few more bobby pins for a more secure foundation. Finally seal the hair with Encompass by Hair Elements for sheen and humidity resistance.
